Re: so, Ric Flair was in Big Stone today

I used to love wrestling, when it was actually good and interesting. It's died off a lot. Still very enjoyable from time to time.

No reason to knock all those people, it's like that at every Ric Flair signing. The man is a wrestling god. It's like a small Comic Con but with hillbillies and speedos. Outside of Wise County, it's normal for people to have those signings or events and see everyone costumed out and having fun.

Saw Flair wrestle Dusty Rhodes a long, long time ago. This was when I was probably 16-16 years old in the early to mid 70's. He supposedly is the nephew of the famous Anderson Brothers wrestling duo (Gene and Olie) in the 70's.

Re: so, Ric Flair was in Big Stone today

Flair was no actual relation to The Andersons, in fact the Andersons weren't related Gene's real name is Anderson but Ole's was Rogowski. Arn was also no actual reation. His real name is Lunde.

Flair was trained for the pro ranks by a tough old-time 'Shooter" by the name of Verne Gagne . The story around the oldschool wrestling circles is that Gagne made you actually wrestle (shoot) during your training days, not just learn the tricks of the trade. This probably explains why Flair has a cauliflower ear. You don't get cauliflower ear by doing purely fake stuff (works). He was also helped in his training by the legendary catch-as-catch-can wrestler Billy Robinson. Robinson, who is now around 80 has made a name for himself in the modern MMA world by teaching some amazing grappling seminars focusing on submission holds. He is also noted for having trained MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba who defeated four members of the Gracie family including Royce. He is also the trainer and mentor of MMA heavyweight Josh Barnette.

Hey starbuck I was reading a thing not to long ago about all the wrestlers that have came through Kingsport back in the days there was a bunch. Starting with small promotions and working their way up.

Hey Gotch I used to watch AWA wrestling when I was younger I remember Verne Gagne. I like hearing about the older wrestlers. I'm Pulling for Barnett in the Strikeforce Tourney. I think he will take it.

Ron and Don Wright, Johnny Valentine, Wahoo McDaniel, Paul Jones, All of them passed through Kingsport, I remember seeing all of the at the old Kingsport Civic Auditorium. Also, the Super Destroyer, Mr. Wrestling I and II, The Super Destroyer was actually unmasked here in BSG by none other that a BSG cop after getting arrested, thus ending his career in this area.

I think one of the big matches I saw was Flair vs Dusty Rhodes. like I said, as a kid it was like being at the superbowl.

Re: so, Ric Flair was in Big Stone today

Heres a read on why Flair may even be doing things such as coming to an appearance at the BSG WalMart for those wondering why:

Shane Ryan on the personal struggles of wrestling star Ric Flair - Grantland
"Call me crazy, but I want to buy the Dallas Cowboys end zone and have the star right at the foot of my bed. That way when I score, I can spike the ball right on the star!" -Woody Paige, Around the Horn 10.9.08

Re: so, Ric Flair was in Big Stone today

Ol Naitch was supposed to come do a book signing at Twin Valley back in June of 08, but something happened and Stamford unbooked him.
Went back and found the thread and it said the event was "Okayed by John Laurenitis", who's getting some face time as Hunter's asst. now than Vince got "booted out" of office.
Some problem with WWE and NWA blew up a couple of weeks b4 the show and WWE laid the screws to 'im.
